Family Law Helplines are tremendously valuable resources to help individuals understand their legal rights, options, and the overall Family Court process. Bilingual (Spanish/English) Helpline Associates provide information regarding family law matters and make referrals to community-based services. For participants who do not speak English or Spanish, LIFT uses the Verizon Language Line for translation services. This ensures that we can connect with anyone in need of support, regardless of their primary language.
LIFT’s friendly, knowledgeable staff, as well as law school student volunteers, answered more than 94,000 questions and served over 13,700 individuals on the Helplines last year.
LIFT Helpline staff answer inquiries from anyone with a New York State family law question: members of the military deployed overseas; homebound, elderly, or physically challenged litigants; parents who are currently incarcerated; and New York State residents living outside of New York City and for whom there is nowhere in their local community to get the type of assistance that LIFT uniquely offers. Our Helpines help us fulfill our mission of providing access to justice for all.
Family Court matters are often intertwined with issues that are best managed through social services. LIFT’s social service referrals, workshops and support groups help our program participants meet their goals while addressing social and economic needs. In order to provide holistic support to help participants stabilize and ultimately move ahead in their legal case, services include:
- high-impact referrals for housing, child care, employment and educational services;
- assistance with enrolling in public benefits; and
- emotional support through crisis intervention, support groups, and mentoring
Through partnerships with community-based organizations in all five boroughs, LIFT’s Family Resource Coordinator, a licensed clinical Social Worker, leads our Parenting Workshops. These programs offer a positive, non-threatening environment in which to focus on individual needs and address the specific issues that arise when both parents are not in the same household. These workshops also empower participants to forge positive, productive relationships as well as manage family finances and expand knowledge of health and nutrition. In the past year, we enrolled almost 140 families in these services, based primarily on referrals from our Family Legal Centers.
