In New York City alone, more than 100,000 grandparents are parenting again because their children have died, become incarcerated, or have been lost to the tangled web of addiction and poverty.  At an age when some of their peers are finally able to relax, many grandparents are once again getting up for 4:00 a.m. feedings, cleaning up messy rooms, and arguing with rebellious teenagers.

No matter what the reason is that a grandparent might take on the responsibility of raising a grandchild, the legal situation for the family can quickly become overwhelmingly complex. Yet in New York, grandparents are not entitled to free legal representation in custody cases, and therefore often face the Family Courts without a lawyer.

LIFT’s Grandparents Legal Education Program addresses the challenges unrepresented grandparents face by empowering them with legal information and compassionate guidance so that they may successfully self-advocate in court.
