Help Children and Families Access Justice: Volunteer with LIFT

Click here to view details on two particular volunteer programs that LIFT currently has available.

LIFT invites volunteers of all ages and disciplines to participate in its mission to promote access to justice for children and families. We are deeply grateful to our current and past volunteers for contributing to the success and sustainability of our programs.

Who are LIFT’s volunteers? While LIFT’s volunteers bring a wide range of educational, professional, and personal experiences, they share a common vision: to improve the experiences of New Yorkers involved in the complex court system. LIFT’s current and past roster of volunteers and interns includes retired professionals, paralegals, law students and recent law school graduates, undergraduate college students, high school students, and lawyers.

Please consider donating your time, enthusiasm, and/or expertise to LIFT in one or many of the following ways:

  • Communications and Technology: Assist with LIFT communications, website content and development, and other technology projects.
  • Criminal Court Education & Information Site Volunteer: Help New Yorkers embroiled in the criminal justice system navigate Brooklyn Criminal Court in Brooklyn Heights. Volunteers provide practical legal information and referrals to community-based organizations in the lobby of the court.
  • Family Court Education & Information Site Volunteer: Team up with a LIFT staff member in the Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, or Queens Family Court to provide information about family law and referrals to community-based organizations.
  • Document Translation: Donate your skills in a language other than English to help LIFT translate its Family Court and Criminal Court resource guides, LIFT litigant newsletters, and web page.
  • Fundraising: Assist with foundation, corporate, and individual giving.
  • Legal Research and Writing: Donate your skills as a law student, lawyer, or retired legal professional to write resource guides for LIFT pertaining to criminal and/or family law.

(Note: extensive training is provided to all LIFT volunteers)

For more information or to apply for a position, please send a resume and letter of interest to volunteer@LIFTonline.org.
