Community Legal Education
LIFT partners with community organizations and service providers whose clients need help with family law matters, particularly child support as it is a very specialized area of the law. We schedule workshops and legal clinics in places where clients are already comfortable receiving services in order to reduce scheduling, transportation, and childcare barriers. The experience of being inside the crowded Family Courthouse can be very stressful, another reason why it’s important for LIFT to be available in NYC’s local communities.
LIFT’s workshops cover the basics of New York family law, are tailored to each audience, and may include a legal clinic in addition to the presentation and Q&A. In a legal clinic, clients meet one-on-one with our staff attorneys, who provide legal advice, information and referrals.
In 2020, LIFT is increasing services for four key constituencies: 1) veterans and active military service-members; 2) immigrants; 3) people who were previously incarcerated; and 4) survivors of domestic and intimate partner violence. LIFT is focusing on these constituencies because our experience in providing family law services has revealed urgent needs for more targeted and specialized outreach, support and legal guidance. LIFT’s partner organizations for the initiative include The Fortune Society, Children’s Aid, the Department of Veterans Services, NYC’s Family Justice Centers, Catholic Charities, Samaritan Daytop Village, and City Council members’ offices, among others. LIFT’s community legal education workshops are available in English and in Spanish. To request a workshop, please fill out the form HERE
